The price of steel comprises the price of its alloy elements, as well as steel scrap and coke. The basic prices for the alloy components are traded on the metal exchange. Important factors in the price of steel are the demand from steel producers, international import and export duties and the pricing policies of major producers and cartels. The extraction of steel requires twice as much energy as the recycling of steel. Due to its high economic efficiency, the majority of scrap iron is fed into the recycling process.

Iron is gray, with a metallic shine. It is very dense and magnetic. As soon as a layer of rust appears on the iron, it becomes very easy to distinguish from the rustproof stainless steel or carbide. Examples of where iron can be found are iron bars and sheets, brake discs, I-beams, grilles, gratings, tools, anvils, etc.
